A sacred space, reborn as a home

Our most ambitious heritage project: the full conversion of a brick church in Woolwich into a one-of-a-kind family home — the build that defines what Straight Up Built takes on when a project demands more than standard skills.

The original fabric leads the design. The gothic arched windows, rose window and face brickwork were preserved and celebrated, and the exposed timber roof trusses were restored and relit with concealed LED lines that wash the rafters in warm light. Beneath the nave, a full-height black kitchen with stone benchtops sits against the brick like a piece of furniture — modern, reversible, respectful.

New steel-framed glazing opens the arches to the garden, and every modern service — structure, waterproofing, climate, lighting — was woven invisibly through the heritage shell. Complex approvals, heritage consultants and unusual trades, all coordinated by Andy directly.
